From a lost stanza of the Finnish epic Kalevala, Pohjola's daughter asks Väinämöinen to carve a pipe for her (Finnish translation by Antti Kalliokoski):
Sanat sepitti, näin nimesi: "Ei, en lähe ennen mukahasi, Ellet pysty piippua piirtämähän, Mulle sauhuja savuttamahan, Pilliä sievää pieltäväksi, Sormihini sopivaksi, Neitoselle näyttäväksi, Piippua korskana kantaisin, Korunpa kovan koristamana, Helyn herkeän helistämänä."
And she spoke the words which follow: "No, I will not yet go with you, If a pipe you cannot carve me, One that is small and dainty, To fit within the palm of my hand; A pipe becoming of a lady, A pipe to be proud of, And a jewel for it to wear, A brightness to adorn my pipe." | |
