The Pearl Crescent is a pretty orange butterfly with a wingspan something over an inch wide. It has a truly intricate pattern on its wings, which takes a photo to highlight.
I only have the one picture here, but I think it shows the pattern very well.

I wonder what the difference is between Fritillaries and Crescents?
Pearl Crescents are supposed to be common, but it's the first time I've ever photographed one.
After I had written the above (in 2010), I've photographed several more Pearl Crescents, including the following showing the butterfly's wings up.
