Peck's Skipper Polites peckius | Aug. 21, 2016 |
In the four years since I first encountered a Peck's skipper (Polites peckius), I've photographed such skippers any number of times. Therefore, I thought it was time to present the Peck's skipper in all its glory (rather than having a single image on this page). It is a particularly beautiful skipper.
Below is my original photo from 2012. |
Young Peck's skippers have brilliant colors. |
As a Peck's skipper ages, its colors become darker. Or so it seems. On the other hand, a darker Peck's skipper is also associated with its being a male. |
There's nothing quite like being eye to eye with a Peck's skipper. |
Peck's skippers are always fun to come across, but given their color variety, they can be a challenge to ID properly.
Photo note: The first and third photos were taken with the Pentax K20D and Voigtlander 125mm macro lens in 2012 and 2014; the second and fourth were taken with the Pentax K3 and the Pentax SMC-A* 200mm macro lens in 2015 and 2016. The second photo is from my backyard; the others are from the Toftrees game land, State College, Pennsylvania. |
