After her children's books, Beatrix Potter became an enthusiastic
Lake District farmer and proud advocate of Herdwicks. The Herdwick
is the sheep of the L.D. and found nowhere else. The meat
isn't that good, the wool can be kind of coarse (though improvements
in the wool quality come through every year), but look at that
face. It's meant to star somewhere.
Behind this contented young woman is an example of natural stone fence (near Easedale), in which mortar isn't used. Easy enough on the flatland but you'll find them all over the fellsides too.
