A Herdwick Portrait

After her children's books, Beatrix Potter became an enthusiastic Lake District farmer and proud advocate of Herdwicks. The Herdwick is the sheep of the L.D. and found nowhere else. The meat isn't that good, the wool can be kind of coarse (though improvements in the wool quality come through every year), but look at that face. It's meant to star somewhere.

Behind this contented young woman is an example of natural stone fence (near Easedale), in which mortar isn't used. Easy enough on the flatland but you'll find them all over the fellsides too.
