Signs of Spring
2022
April 15, 2022

Spring has come around, and wildlife responds to the change in weather.

Preparing for the spring, a red squirrel built a nest to prepare for the next generation. That was in February, whereas spring action truly begins in April.

Note: A squirrel nest is also called a "drey."

A sure sign of spring is the arrival of a great blue heron at the Toftrees pond.

Two to four great blue herons become residents at the pond until the fall.

A particular spring highlight for me is the visiting osprey. One or two of them arrive at the Toftrees pond and spend one to two weeks there before flying elsewhere.

Seen from my living room, a brown thrasher returning to State College is another sign of spring.

With the warmer weather, the snapping turtles begin to appear in the Toftrees pond.

The large snapper seems enormous next to the little painted turtle. Perhaps friends? I consider it amazing how well different species can tolerate or get along with one another, especially in comparison to humans.

Photo note: I used a Pentax K3-II, with the Pentax 150-450mm lens, during February (first photo) and April (remaining photos) in the Toftrees game land and State College, Centre County, Pennsylvania.
