On Saturday, February 1, the night was particularly clear, along with a crescent moon and nearby Venus. What better way to avoid thinking about world disasters than by seeing something beautiful and eternal: the night sky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The first photo is of the moon and Venus; however, it appeals to my imagination. I view it as a glimpse of a world with two suns (rising or setting, depending on one’s point of view).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A familiar friend in the winter sky is the constellation of Orion. His belt and sword are an instant giveaway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Somewhat hidden by the trees is the constellation the Big Dipper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is one of my favorite winter nighttime views: The crescent moon, Venus (which is always a crescent), the sky, the stars, the trees, and moonlight reflection from an icy surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And if anyone has any doubt about the nature the moon (its being a crescent), the following (taken a minute after the above) is a telephoto exposed to compensate for the bright light of the moon and Venus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To end this particular series, I leave with the crescent moon having a Cheshire cat smile as it looks upon the Earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
