Rose-Breasted GrosbeakNovember 22, 2009

The male rose-breasted grosbeak is a particularly striking bird (somewhat similar in size to a large sparrow) and is always a joy to see at our bird feeder. Unfortunaely, the grosbeak isn't one of our more common feeder birds.

For whatever reason, I seem to run into female and immature rose-breasted grosbeaks far more often in the game land.
Juvenile and female rose-breasted grosbeaks

The immature rose-breasted grosbeak is on the left, and the female (probably Mom) is on the right. Or do I have it reversed?

Photo note: For the first photo, I used a Pentax *1st D (and probably my SMC-A 300mm lens) in 2005; for the second, I used a Pentax K200D, with the SMC 1000mm reflex lens, on July 6, 2009.
