Spicebush Swallowtail, Revisited
Papilio troilus
Aug. 7, 2022

It has been nearly six years since I've last posted anything about the spicebush swallowtail (Papilio troilus), a large and beautiful butterfly.

But then nature sends subtle signals, reminding me what I should do. Hey, nothing like meeting a spicebush eye to eye.

The main difference between a female and a male spicebush swallowtail is that the male spicebush (below) has an additional (if faint) upper row of dots on its front wing.

My favorite view of the spicebush swallowtail is with its wings raised.

  Talk about striking colors!
