Dragonfly Twelve-Spotted Skimmer Libellula pulchella | June 12, 2011 |
The male twelve-spotted skimmer is a magnificent dragonfly about 2 inches (5 cm) long. |
The main characteristic of the twelve-spotted skimmer is the black wing spots: 12 of them (which would be an easy guess). Both the male and female have the 12 spots, but the male has white wing spots as well. |
The body is supposed to be all white, whereas the one above is somewhat tan. Perhaps he is a young skimmer growing into his adult colors?
Photo note: Both photos were taken with the Pentax K20D and the Voigtlander 125mm macro lens, today, 12 June 2011, in the Toftrees game land behind Cooper's Pond, State College, Pennsylvania. |
