Dragonfly
Twelve-Spotted Skimmer

Libellula pulchella
June 12, 2011

The male twelve-spotted skimmer is a magnificent dragonfly about 2 inches (5 cm) long.

The main characteristic of the twelve-spotted skimmer is the black wing spots: 12 of them (which would be an easy guess). Both the male and female have the 12 spots, but the male has white wing spots as well.

The body is supposed to be all white, whereas the one above is somewhat tan. Perhaps he is a young skimmer growing into his adult colors?

Photo note: Both photos were taken with the Pentax K20D and the Voigtlander 125mm macro lens, today, 12 June 2011, in the Toftrees game land behind Cooper's Pond, State College, Pennsylvania.
