Beginning a few years ago, when Sue and I started raising monarchs for release outside, I posted a sequence of seven pages covering the different monarch phases along with many photos.
This year, I filmed a monarch emerging from his chrsysalis, inasmuch as the transformation is amazing. The first 90 seconds of the video is at 1.33x real time; the second 9 minutes is at 2x real time.

Monarchs have an incredible lifestyle. It takes four generations of eastern monarchs to travel from their breeding grounds in Mexico to their habitat throughout northeastern United States and then return to Mexico. Each generation of monarchs has its own complex metamorphosis. |
