The overlook not only gives splendid views of this particular canyon (just off the main one) but also shows the way most people reach the trail: via Route 9 which approaches the tunnel from the west.
Route 9 zigs and zags across the landscape while climbing ever higher. Unfortunately, it cannot be seen particularly well in the photo above (reduced for web purposes), but the highway can be seen in its glory by a combination of two side-by-side telephotos.
