A snowberry clearwing

The snowberry clearwing (Hemaris diffinis) is the smaller of the two species of hummingbird moths in the United States. It is somewhat larger in body size than a bumblebee but has a magnificent presence thanks to its wonderful wing motion while hovering. As such it is a joy to photograph.

Following are ten photos of a recent visit by a snowberry clearwing in my backyard.

Snowberry clearwing.

A hummingbird moth is an example of convergent evolution, inasmuch as its lifestyle is similar to a hummingbird: hovering while sipping nectar.

“Convergent evolution.” OMG, yes, I love it. That’s exactly the appeal, quite apart from its own distinctive beauty, at least for me as a hummingbird lover!
